Short-term Disability Insurance

Overview

While State employees have accrued sick and vacation time to protect their salary against off-the-job accident and illness, they are not eligible to receive TDI benefits.  For greater protection, employees may purchase short-term disability insurance from Aflac or Colonial Life. Short-term disability insurance replaces a portion of your income when you cannot work due to a covered accident off the job or sickness.

  • Benefits are paid directly to you, regardless of any other disability insurance you may have
  • Your coverage is fully portable (e.g., you can keep the same plan even if you switch jobs or leave State employment)
  • Your premium rates stay the same unless you make changes to your plan

Premium Rates Your premium rates can range from a few dollars to over a hundred dollars per pay period depending on your age, salary, benefits period, and eliminition periods. Please contact Aflac or Colonial Life to receive an exact quote.
Coverage Termination Coverage terminates at age 70, even if you are still employed. Coverage terminates on the policy anniversary following your 70th birthday.
