Short-term Disability Insurance
Overview
While State employees have accrued sick and vacation time to protect their salary against off-the-job accident and illness, they are not eligible to receive TDI benefits. For greater protection, employees may purchase short-term disability insurance from Aflac or Colonial Life. Short-term disability insurance replaces a portion of your income when you cannot work due to a covered accident off the job or sickness.
Key Features
- Benefits are paid directly to you, regardless of any other disability insurance you may have
- Your coverage is fully portable (e.g., you can keep the same plan even if you switch jobs or leave State employment)
- Your premium rates stay the same unless you make changes to your plan
